A soft space for hard conversations.

Mission

Pregnancy Uncut is a podcast dedicated to exploring the often hidden, untold and traumatic stories of pregnancies that have not gone to plan.

The majority of pregnancies and births are uncomplicated. But when everyone is hoping for happy ending, what happens when it doesn't all go to plan?

Historically, complicated pregnancies have been discussed quietly, in whispers, behind closed doors only. Put simply, pregnancy heartache has been off limits in polite conversation.

At Pregnancy Uncut, we believe in the power of stories to break down these barriers and start these important conversations.
No topic is off limits.

Each episode is dedicated to an open, honest and courageous conversation with a guest who has experienced complications first hand, such as infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, obstetric emergencies, birth trauma, perinatal mental health, and baby loss at any stage.

Hosted by experts in Women’s Health and Pregnancy, Dr Alex Umbers and Dr Kara Thompson, we are able to provide a unique insight into the difficulties that can occur with pregnancy and birth.

Pregnancy Uncut aims to help raise awareness, create a language around loss and hope, as well as a support network for people who have experienced or know someone affected by pregnancy and it's related complications.

In short, we are aiming to provide a soft place for these hard conversations.

As patients, these are the conversations we wish we had heard.

As doctors, we hope this podcast helps shine a light on to the often hidden experience of women, their families, and their loved ones, as they navigate a pregnancy that doesn't go to plan.

This is pregnancy.

Uncut.

Background

This podcast was born from personal experiences both as obstetric patients and obstetric doctors. We are surrounded by the frequent yet often unspoken complications of pregnancy and pregnancy loss. We want to give voice to these experiences.

Much social discussion and media is dedicated to the magic of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood.  But what does it feel like when things don’t go to plan? In their own complicated pregnancies, Dr Alex and Dr Kara were deeply moved by the power and solidarity of stories from others who have had similar difficulties and experiences. But why hadn’t these stories been shared before? Why is there a societal reluctance to reveal the vulnerability and resilience of women and families experiencing pregnancy complications?

We believe in the strength of storytelling. The transformative power to move us closer and to deepen our capacity to support someone experiencing complications.  Dr Kara and Dr Alex wanted to create a platform to shine light on these hidden stories, cut through the BS, and create a space for connection, healing and hope.
